IDFC Project Finance is a pioneer in lending for infrastructure projects. It were founded with the sole objective of providing and promoting private financing of Indian infrastructure.

IDFC's business provides a full range of services, from private placements of equity and debt, public offerings and project advisory to mergers and acquisitions. The coverage span of IDFC business encompasses various growth sectors, including Infrastructure, Power, Real Estate, Media, Engineering, Automobiles, Consumer Goods and Technology, amongst others.

IDFC is the nodal agency for the Indian government's public private partnership (PPP) initiatives in infrastructure spending. With the government being its chief promoter (18% stake), IDFC has access to decision makers in government entities and multilateral development agencies.

IDFC has so far been arranging at least a fifth of the funds invested in India's infrastructure. But with a much larger participation of private sector players getting paramount, IDFC's role has only gotten bigger. As per the Planning Commission, the share of private sector is expected to go up to 50% of infrastructure outlay of Rs 45 trillion during the Twelfth Plan period (2012 -17). This is against 30% and 18% share respectively during the 12th and 10th plans. Being amongst the first companies to be awarded the Infrastructure Finance Company (IFC) status, IDFC also has the first mover advantage in raising cheaper funds for asset growth. Thus even on a very conservative basis, the visibility in IDFC's long term growth prospects inspires confidence that a value investor would look for.
